2019 was a year of World Cups. There were three of them – Men’s Cricket, Men’s Rugby, and Women’s Football.
For this reason – and for a bit of a warm up for Qatar 2022, the Men’s Football World Cup – which will take place in December (don’t ask), we created the Christmas World Cup for our 2019 Christmas Card design.
The idea was inspired by our love of World Cup wall charts, the kind that you might get free inside the newspaper, where you fill in the results as the tournament progresses.
To create the Christmas World Cup, we collected all of our favourite things about Christmas (sorry if your favourite didn’t qualify) and sorted them into groups. From there it is down to the recipient to choose the top two from each group and pit them against one another in the knockout phase.
The design references the visual language of sport: strong, simple shapes, bold colours, dynamic typography (with a nod to Mexico ’86).
Deciding the qualifying ‘teams’ and assigning them colours and three-letter abbreviations was lots of fun.
We invited everyone to send us their World Champion and the chart below is updated daily as the results pour in.

- Fairy Tale of New York
- Time with Family
